    Exam round numbers$25,000 + $25,000

Use only when a practice or exam-style stem gives a flat $25,000 additional exemption.

    How to calculate the savings

    1. Start with the assessed (Save Our Homes) value, not the market value.
    2. Subtract the $25,000 first exemption for both school and non-school taxable value.
    3. Subtract the additional exemption (2026: $26,411) from non-school taxable value only, for value above $50,000.
    4. Apply school millage to the school taxable value and non-school millage to the non-school taxable value.
    5. Savings equals tax at this assessed value before homestead exemptions minus tax with homestead.

    Traps to check

    1. Do not apply the additional exemption to school taxes. It is non-school only.
    2. Do not give the additional exemption on value at or below $50,000.
    3. Do not use a flat $25,000 additional exemption for 2026. The adjusted figure is $26,411.
    4. Do not treat the 3 percent Save Our Homes cap as fixed. The 2026 cap is 2.7 percent.
    5. Do not apply CS/HJR 1-F to 2026 calculations. It would start January 1, 2027 if approved by voters.
